Frequently Asked Questions.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of very fine, single-use needles into specific points on your body. These acupuncture points are individually tailored and carefully selected in order to stimulate the free flow of Qi (pronounced ch-ee) within your body and activate the para-sympathetic nervous system. More and more research is being conducted to explain how acupuncture works from a physiological perspective. Acupuncture can help to initiate responses from the CNS (Central Nervous System), increase blood flow and activate the release of natural pain relieving chemicals.
Does acupuncture hurt?
A lot of patients are pleasantly surprised that they rarely feel anything during an acupuncture treatment. Most patients feel extremely relaxed and many even fall asleep. I will be there to ensure you are comfortable for the entirety of your treatment and answer any questions you may have along the way.
What if I don’t like needles?
Patients that are needle-phobic still have treatment options that do not include needles. Acupressure, non-insertive needles, moxibustion, cupping and tuina are all techniques that can be used in combination or in place of acupuncture, when necessary.
Do you reuse needles?
No. All needles are high quality, sterile and single-use. This practice is in accordance with the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association’s guidelines for infection prevention and control. They are safely and appropriately disposed of immediately after use.
What should I expect in a treatment?
After taking a comprehensive intake of your past history and current presentation, we will talk through your health goals and discuss your treatment plan. This may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion or a combination of them. Please see price list for a an in-depth look at each treatment.
What do I need to bring?
Wearing loose and comfortable clothing is usually preferred by patients, however not essential. You are welcome to bring along any test results or images related to your presenting complaint. There will be water and tea available for you after your treatment.
What if I get a herbal formula?
During your consultation I will write a herbal script tailored to your individual needs. Granule formulas will be dispensed onsite and given to you at the end of your appointment. If you require a raw herbal script, they will be outsourced from an external dispensary and delivered straight to your door with instructions on how to take them.
